Crowns and Bridges
A dental crown, also referred to as a cap, is a full covering of porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or all metal for a tooth that is fractured or has a large area of decay. It fits over the damaged tooth, providing strength and preserving most of the natural tooth structure.
Crowns are also an excellent solution for “cracked tooth syndrome,” when a large filling causes sensitivity to hot and cold or biting pressure. The tooth does not appear to be fractured and does not feel broken, but an internal crack causes symptoms. A crown can bring relief and save the tooth, often without a root canal.

Then Dr. Blaha will remove areas of decay and fracture, and shape the tooth for good retention of the crown. She will make impressions of your teeth, which are sent to a lab for fabrication of your permanent crown. A temporary, plastic crown is cemented into place, meanwhile. You’ll be numb so that you are comfortable throughout the process.
In a few weeks, we’ll see you for a return visit. No anesthetic is necessary this time. We remove the temporary crown, fit and adjust the permanent one, and bond it securely. Most patients are symptom-free within 24 hours! The crown functions as a natural tooth; strong, durable, and long-lasting.
Missing teeth can severely impact your bite, and may lead to further tooth loss. A bridge is a replacement for a missing tooth (or two). The teeth on either side of the space are crowned, and a bridge containing the artificial tooth is attached to these abutments. It also requires two appointments, but at the first visit, you are fitted with a temporary tooth so you are more comfortable and the missing tooth is not noticeable.
