Posted on 2/29/2020 by Platte Valley Dental Care
When Should You Avoid Fluoride Treatments?Regular fluoride treatments are normally recommended by dentists to maintain tooth strength and to prevent issues with cavities and tooth decay in general. Most of the time a fluoride treatment is a good idea and should be done, but there are a few instances when people should avoid fluoride treatments.

We're going to go over those times down below and look at potential issues caused by excess fluoride as well.

When You Should Not You Get Fluoride Treatment

Children and adults that are already getting fluoride through their regular drinking water. People who have well water with fluoride should have their levels monitored and then we can help you determine if fluoride treatments should be an option. Most other healthy children and adults can benefit from regular fluoride treatments.

Problems with Too Much Fluoride

Very high levels of fluoride in the body can be toxic, even though smaller amounts are a good thing. That's why it's very important to monitor mouthwashes and toothpastes that contain fluoride along with other products when they are around small children. Excess fluoride in very high levels can cause a condition known as fluorosis in children under eight years of age.

It's a cosmetic condition that leaves permanent teeth with brown stains on the enamel. Too much fluoride can also lead to brittle bones and other serious conditions if it's taken in in large enough quantities. These serious conditions usually only occur from excess fluoride that originates from well water in very high amounts and not from dental treatments or city water.

If you have well water, you should have it tested for its mineral composition. Use that information to help you make decisions about drinking the water and whether or not you should be getting fluoride treatments as well.
