How Your Teeth Will Likely Feel Right After Your Braces Come Off

How Your Teeth Will Likely Feel Right After Your Braces Come OffOnce your teeth are deemed to be fully straightened, our team will schedule a date for you to get them off. While this might be a joyous time, there are a few things to consider after they are removed. The first, and most important, is that your teeth will feel much different than before and this can take an adjustment period for you to get accustomed to it.

After Braces, What Comes Next?

After you get your braces taken off, you will likely feel relieved. However, your teeth are now in a new position after months or years of repositioning. In general, you will feel a slight pain in your gums when you eat and drink from all the realignment. Since teeth and the bones are not as malleable as soft tissue or cartilage, it could take several weeks to months before the lingering soreness and pain dissipate. It will not be as severe as when you had the braces on, just a lingering side-effect.

After your braces are removed, you will be required to wear a retainer indefinitely. For the first few months, you will have to wear your retainer almost all-day, every day to help hold your teeth into position. Your teeth will eventually shift back to where they were, especially in the beginning since it is still healing from the procedure. After a few months, you can usually begin wearing them only at night. This will take careful planning to ensure your teeth are ready for this step to avoid them from realigning throughout the day. After a year or two of wearing them every night, you will only have to wear them every other night for the rest of your life. If you are ready to go through the step of realigning your teeth, give our staff a call today.
