Posted on 11/16/2020 by Platte Valley Dental Care
A Knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth) is a typical dental emergency. According to the American Dental Association, 39% of these cases are sports-related. If you want to get your tooth back, you must take swift action to save your knocked-out tooth. First, control the bleeding and then correctly store the tooth, but only if it is not a baby tooth. After that, visit our offices as soon as possible to increase the chances of the tooth being safely returned to its socket. Here are some tips that will help you safely store your tooth until you get to our offices.
Tip 1: Rinse the Tooth
A knocked-out tooth is often bloody and dirty because you will often pick it up from the ground. Ensure that after locating the tooth, pick it up with the crown, and avoid touching the root. Before you store it, rinse it with clean water. It is advisable to use warm water, but if you cannot get warm water, use room temperature water. Milk is another alternative to water. Finally, ensure you do not scrub the tooth.
Tip 2: Store the Tooth Properly
If you can place the tooth back in its socket, do so; this is the best way to store a knocked-out tooth because it will get all the favorable conditions to preserve it and prevent it from getting in contact with germs. Alternatively, you can hold your tooth on your cheeks side pocket. If you have milk, soak it in a glass of milk and carry it to our offices, or you can store it in a tooth saver kit.
Tip 3: Get Immediate Dental Care
We advise you to visit our office within the first 30 minutes after the accident. It makes it easier to save the tooth without developing any complications. Our team of professional dentists will provide the best treatment procedure after looking at the injury's extent. Feel free to always contact our offices for any dental emergency procedures.
